The world seems to be in chaos. None of the old rules apply and no one seems to know what the new rules are. This blog is about the confusion of one little old lady from Texas and her effort to make sense of it all.
In this day of unstable economics, most people are looking for ways to increase their income. This makes for fertile ground for various 'make money from home' schemes. Most of us know that there
really is no magic way to make money but in desperate times, we often lower our defenses and are easy prey to charming, fast-talking telemarkers. Each day I receive dozens of messages promising wonderful things with little effort on my part...just enter our contests...stuff envelopes...subscribe to our psychic readings...and soon wonderful riches will come your way. And, of course, that charming, fast=talking, young person would NEVER lie to you.
Well, folks, they certainly will!! Some of these sites will tell you actual lies and others will just talk around an issue until you believe you heard something that they didn't actually say. Either way, it is you holding the bag and its usually an empty bag. I suppose there are sites out there where you can work hard and make money. The problem is that their target audience is often senior citizens, who can be convinced that they can send a grandchild to college if they will only commit a few thousand dollars to his comany, or that you can buy that new car, or the house you want. Always some large and wonderous dream.
I have yet to find anyone who can tell me how to earn an extra hundred a week to help with the grocery bill or pay for a doctor's visit. You are too smart to invest a couple thousand dollars for such a small return. So the big promises. I mean, someone is making money. Surely I can too.
Take it from one who got caught up with this type of scheme. Righ now I'm into it for about $8,000. In the past 6 months, I have realized $40 for my efforts.
So please do be careful. If you need extra money, this is probably not the way to get it.
There is a group of people who want "In God we Trust" taken out of
every government building, public school, and off our money. Their
rational is that they don't believe in God and are offended by the
constant reference. Another group wants to do away with the greeting of
"Merry Christmas because it is a religious holiday and does not fit into their belief system. They don't want to listen to a greeting that
refers to Christmas or anything Christian. On the other hand, some
Christian groups complain that Halloween is just an excuse to worship
Satan. Of course, all these protesters could just ignore the
greeting, change the channel on their TV, or keep their kids at home..
But that's not enough. They want it GONE!!.
Since that is the case, then I want to abolish Mother's Day. It depresses me because I am not a mother, have never been a mother and at my age, will probably never be a mother. At church today, they said a special prayer for all the mother's in the congregation. They didn't pray for me! At lunch, the restaurant handed out lovely roses to all the mothers. How do you think I felt when I'm the only one at the table that didn't get one? No one bought me a card, or called, or took me to dinner. Not even a passing hug. It's obviously not fair to all of the un-mothers out there. Someone should do something about it. Anyone want to join me?
Just for a minute, let's pretend you are an American and decide you want to live somewhere else. Maybe you'd like to go to China. You don't have any money, and you don't have a passport but you decide to go anyway. Somehow you get to China...it wasn't easy, you had to stow away in a smelling fishing boat and rough seas, but you made it. Once you got on dry land, you managed to make your way into a busy city and escape authorities. So now what?? Do you expect to get a good job and a nice house? You manage to get a job but a pretty nasty one. Doing something that most Chinese people would rather not do. But that's ok...you don't have to pay taxes and the Chinese government has a neat program where you can get free food and housing and health care. If the law enforcement agencies question you because you "look different" than the other citizens, you can go to the local news media and tell them how you are being harrassed and discriminated against. Some kind people will take up your cause and chastize the police for "not being nice to you."
Time passes and you have a few kids. Since they were born in China, they are automatically citizens with all the benefits of other Chinese citizens. Plus you get more government sponsored benefits because, of course, you can't support them. Not a bad life. Now, someone has to pay for these programs that you are enjoying and after awhile, they get tired of paying and protest. No problem!! Just get a bunch of people just like you and you can march on the government buildings demanding you are being mistreated and abused. The newspapers pick up the story and after several days of headlines, the government feels guilty and decides to make you all citizens. And everyone lives happily ever after.
Does this scenerio seem ridiculous to you? Well, its happening every day only not in China or any other country except ours.. What are we thinking??
After all the recent publicity about sports figures behaving badly, it is reassuring to find that it doesn't have to be that way. Tiger Woods is probably the biggest disappointment, particularly to all the little old ladies out there who looked on him like a son. But there was also Jessie James and several well known football players who hardly lived up to their 'hero' status.
Enter Zach Johnson. Since there is no scandal to put him in the headlines, a lot of people won't recognize the name. Zach Johnson has won many major tournaments and matches in his career. In 2007, he came from near obscurity to win the Masters Open, beating even Tiger Woods. After that win on Easter Sunday he said "I can't help but believe that my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, was walking with me. I owe this one to him."
It is quite refreshing to find that "Sports Hero" doesn't always translate to "self-absorbed prima donna.". And even more surprising for a sports figure to acknowledge his faith. Thanks, Zach.
